76-team tourney may draw 5,000 to city

A record 1,200 girls on 76 Pennsylvania teams have descended on the Valley for this weekend’s Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame Tournament, forcing organizers to use eight additional fields outside host Sunbury to accommodate the three-day event.

Seven games opened the competition Friday evening at the Persing Recreation Complex in Sunbury.

Games today will be held on five fields at the Persing Complex, and at Hamilton Field, Oppenheimer Pleasure Grounds Field and Emmanuel Bible Fellowship Church Field in or near the city. Games will also be played on four fields in Lewisburg, two fields in Selinsgrove, and one field each in Danville and Point Township.
