WEST MILTON — A sport utility vehicle crashed into the West Milton post office Wednesday afternoon after a female driver accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake when entering a parking spot.
While the woman was uninjured, the building sustained enough damage that it will be closed until it can be deemed safe, Milton Postmaster Rick Sheets said. The lobby of the post office will be closed and retail operation suspended until the building can be structurally secured, he said.
Around 1:45 p.m., the driver slammed into a mailbox in front of the building, causing the building’s brick wall to buckle and an entrance overhang to splinter.
The woman was helped home by neighbors, Milton state police Trooper Andrew Peters said.
Post office box customers can pick up their mail at the rear door of the building between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
A post office employee inside the building had emptied the mailbox five minutes prior to the crash, so no mail was damaged or lost, Sheets said. The employee was also uninjured, he said.
Milton state police did not release the identity of the driver.
