Valley group: Get smart about inside jobs

Nonprofit pilfering 'a plague'

SELINSGROVE — When the Union County West End Fire Company discovered its treasurer had embezzled $38,000 from the organization’s social club in 2008, the scandal caused volunteer firefighters to leave in droves.

It took four years for the fire company to rise from the ashes, but it was revived last fall and is now operating with about 50 volunteers.

“Anyone who watches the news knows embezzling is a plague on our nation,” said Joe Kantz, president of Leadership Susquehanna Valley, a charitable corporation that provides programs for effective community and organizational leadership.

The group is sponsoring a seminar in March that provides financial oversight tips to Valley nonprofit and volunteer organizations with the aid of Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organization representatives.

“The nonprofit sector has a lot of black eyes” because of the spate of embezzlements nationwide, said Tish Mogan, a standards for excellence officer at PANO.
