TRAFFIC ADVISORY: White Deer Pike and Watsontown river bridge

The Daily Item

— WHITE DEER — In order to address safety concerns raised by White Deer Township officials, the contractor working on the SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority project over White Deer Pike in Union County will modify the detour.

Effective Tuesday morning, the road will be closed on the Watsontown side of the Nurse Helen Fairchild Memorial Bridge. Prior to this, local traffic had access to Harberson Road via White Deer Pike from the Watsontown side of the river.

The change is being made because non-local traffic, including large trucks, attempted to access Route 15 via the local roads, with some of the larger vehicles getting “hung up” at the White Deer Pike/Harberson Road intersection due to its tight turning radius.

Traffic is advised to follow the official, signed detour route, which includes Route 405, Route 44 and Route 15, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation said.

The contractor replacing the old railroad bridge over White Deer Pike anticipates having the road reopened to traffic by the end of August.
