SUNBURY — Art stepped in as the universal language this afternoon when 11 high school students from China visited the Sunbury YMCA Arts Center to take a pottery class.
Mary Jo Tavares, director of the center, took the 15-year-old students on a tour. She pointed out the different paper mache projects, sculptures and watercolors done by other groups who have visited the center.
“We are excited on so many levels,” she said. “It’s been great to show off the center as well as Sunbury to these students.”
The visit marks a collaboration between the Guangdong Experimental High School in China and Susquehanna University. Susquehanna hopes that in bringing them to the area to visit, the students will be more likely to attend school here.
Students made clay tiles engraved with their initials. The tiles will ultimately be put together into a larger piece, which will be framed and hung at Susquehanna University as a commemoration to their visit.
