State agents arrest 21 of 31 suspected drug dealers

SHAMOKIN -- More than 60 narcotics agents, drug task force officers and local law enforcement today fanned out across Northumberland County and have arrested 21 out of 31 suspected drug dealers as part of a street-level sweep.

Attorney General Tom Corbett said that the investigation focused on the import and distribution of heroin, cocaine, marijuana and various prescription drugs in the Northumberland County area, specifically in Shamokin and Coal Township.

Corbett said that these arrests are a culmination of an eight-month cooperative investigation with Northumberland County District Attorney Anthony Rosini and the Shamokin Police Department, involving the Attorney General's Bureau of Narcotics Investigation (BNI), the Northumberland/Montour County Drug Task Force and other local law enforcement agencies in Northumberland County.

"Today's arrests are part of an ongoing effort to target local, street-level drug dealers and drug suppliers, who are bringing heroin, cocaine and prescription drugs to the streets of Northumberland County," Corbett said. "Street-level sweeps, such as this case, take local dealers and users off the street and eventually lead to arrests of upper-level suppliers and complex drug organizations."

Corbett said that undercover officers and confidential informants made more than 60 controlled purchases during the investigation, and were able to determine that the suspects arrested today didn't necessarily work together, but they did have common drug suppliers.

Agents said that the defendants met their customers on the streets of Shamokin and other Northumberland County towns, in parking lots, at businesses and occasionally at their homes in order to purchase and sell drugs.

According to the investigation, the individuals arrested for distributing prescription pills were supplying drugs such as Dilaudid, Suboxone, Morphine, Vicodin and Percocet, all of which are narcotic pain medications.

"Anywhere there's an influx of drugs and drug related activity, it can cause serious quality of life issues for residents," Corbett said. "This investigation targeted the problem head on and we have successfully put a significant dent in the Northumberland County area drug trade."

Corbett said that in addition to the 31 arrests today, this investigation also resulted in the arrest of four of this area's drug suppliers back in August and September of this year. Agents seized 590 bags of heroin and 17 grams of cocaine during those arrests.

Corbett noted that the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are anticipated.

Corbett thanked Northumberland County District Attorney Anthony Rosini's office, the Northumberland/Montour County Drug Task Force, the Shamokin Police Department, the Coal Township Police Department, the Sunbury Police Department, the Mount Carmel Police Department, the PSP Troop F Interdiction Unit, the Northumberland County Sherriff's Department and Northumberland County Probation for their assistance in this investigation.
