SUNBURY — Nearly a month after the death of the most successful Shikellamy Braves wrestling coach in the history of the school, former wrestlers and friends have gathered together to ensure that Phil Lockcuff’s name will be remembered forever.
The Resilite Wrestling Club, of Sunbury, has recommended renaming the Shikellamy Fieldhouse as the Lockcuff Fieldhouse, and Shikellamy School District Superintendent Pat Kelley wants to know what residents think.
“We will have a link on our website starting today where people can come and vote yes or no,” Kelley said. “You will also be able to leave a comment.”
Kelley said the district will look over the results, and a decision will be made.
“We wanted to get the public involved in this decision,” he said. “Phil Lockcuff was an important part of this area, and we wanted everyone to have a say.”
Lockcuff, who led the Braves to three state titles during his Hall of Fame career, died Jan. 25. He was 75.
Lockcuff coached at Shikellamy for 24 years, leading the Braves to the PIAA Class AAA title in 1984, 1985 and again in 1991. He coached a dozen PIAA individual champions as well and finished his career with a record of 346-71-6.
Lockcuff was still active with the Braves’ program as a radio announcer up until his death.
He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1998.
“This is a great idea to name the fieldhouse after Phil,” Tom Krieger, Resilite Wrestling Club president, said. “There is no man in the Shikellamy school history that has such great credentials as Phil. I hope the public votes for this, and I know anyone that has been in contact or around Phil Lockcuff will appreciate this.”
The news that Lockcuff had died hit the community hard, and over the course of two days, several hundred people went to Zion Lutheran Church, Market and Fifth streets, to pay their respects.
“People respected and like Phil Lockcuff,” Kelley said. “Renaming the fieldhouse was something Resilite brought to my attention, and we have acted by setting up this link for people to come and voice their opinions.”
