Pre-existing condition? Time running out to apply for help

HARRISBURG – Do you have a pre-existing health issue and need insurance? The Pennsylvania Insurance Department reminds Pennsylvanians in this situation that they have until Saturday to submit applications for the health plan known as PA Fair Care.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced last week that enrollment in state “high-risk pools” will end March 2. Any applications received after this date will not be processed.

These high-risk pools are uninsurable people who have sought coverage and been unable to get it because of their pre-existing conditions, or they’ve been offered coverage only at unaffordable, high premium rates.

Last week, the department expressed its concern to CMS regarding this suspension and asked that the decision be reconsidered.  The department has not received a response.

PA Fair Care currently has 6,779 enrollees in the program. At the current time, this application suspension does not affect their coverage as long as monthly premiums are paid.

For more information or to enroll in PA Fair Care, visit www.PAFairCare.com.  Persons looking for additional health coverage options can click on www.PAHealthOptions.com for more information.
