The Sunbury Redevelopment Authority will be holding a public auction today as part of its continued efforts to rid the city of blighted properties.
The first auction will be held at 6 p.m. at 700 North Seventh St. where individuals interested in the property will be afforded the chance to bid as long as they have a 10 percent down payment.
The second auction will be held at 6:30 p.m. at 1106-1116 Miller St. for a double lot. At this property, the buyer must make a 10 percent or $5,000 down payment at the time of purchase.
Both actions also include the stipulation that the purchaser must provide the redevelopment authority with plans of the redevelopment of the property to the city clerk within 30 days of the purchase.
The city and the redevelopment authority reserve the right to accept or reject redevelopment plans and any down payments will be refunded if plans are rejected.
The city also has the right to require a return of the property if the purchaser does not complete the accepted redevelopment plans within one year of the purchase date.
Sunbury Mayor David Persing will act as the auctioneer.
Persing announced Phase II in his blight removal plan in March.
“This will be a much more proactive effort to address properties and try to save them from reaching the blight guidelines which will lead to demolition of city acquisition,” he said. “This will be enforced under the Sunbury Redevelopment Authority and will be under the city rules and regulations within our code office.”
Persing said he will continue to stay on top of the blighted properties project.
“We just don’t want to tear down building,” he said. “We want the ones people just walk away from and we will continue to be proactive in that effort.”
Persing said the city has at least 25 properties in the Northumberland County Court system waiting for a judge to rule on whether or not the city can take control of the homes.
