Camp Hero counselor charged with sexual assault

MILLVILLE — A 20-year-old camp counselor is facing felony sex charges, accused of assaulting a hearing-impaired teen camper on the grounds of Camp Victory two years ago.

Karisa A. Zapotocky, of Allentown, is charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl on Aug. 5, 2011, while working as a counselor at Camp Hero, an annual week long interactive outdoor program for deaf and hearing-impaired children between the ages of 6 and 17 that is held at Camp Victory in Millville, Columbia County.

Jamie Huntley, executive director of Camp Victory, was unable to provide any information on Zapotocky.

She said Camp Victory works with many non-profit groups that provide a camp experience for children with chronic illnesses and physical and developmental challenges, like Camp Hero, and each has its own staff and supervision.

“We are aware of the legal action involving an incident at Camp Hero and are deeply saddened by this news. We know Camp Hero has cooperated with the authorities during the investigation, and their director would be the best one to talk with,” Huntley said.

Camp Hero Director Sarah Moore did not respond to a call Tuesday.

Dennis Wolff, president of Camp Victory’s board of directors and founder of the facility that has served more than 20,000 campers since opening in 1994, also did not reply to a call for comment.

Zapotocky, who is free on $25,000 bail, is scheduled to appear Wednesday morning at a preliminary hearing before District Judge Doug D. Brewer in Millville on two counts of felony aggravated indecent assault, institutional sexual assault and two counts of misdemeanor indecent assault.
