Federal appeals court upholds most 'kids for cash' convictions

HARRISBURG — A federal appeals court is upholding all but one of the convictions in the case of a county judge in the "kids for cash" juvenile justice scandal in northeastern Pennsylvania.

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday rejected nearly all of the arguments made by attorneys for Mark Ciavarella, currently serving a 336-month sentence for racketeering, fraud, conspiracy and other offenses.

The appellate court threw out one count of honest services mail fraud, saying the statute of limitations had expired.

Ciavarella defense attorney Al Flora says he's still analyzing the decision and hopes to discuss it soon with his client. He says no decision's been made about whether to ask the full 3rd Circuit to review the case or seek appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
