Two vehicles strike 400-pound black bear near Danville

DANVILLE — A bear was killed after being struck by two vehicles Wednesday evening on Route 54 near Perkins Restaurant in Mahoning Township.

Mahoning Township police said the male bear, estimated at 400 pounds, was removed by an officer from the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

The bruin ran across from the eastbound to westbound lanes and into a GMC Terrain driven by John Strauss, 73, of Ottawa, Canada, traveling in the passing lane. The Strauss vehicle was driven away from the crash occurring at 9:28 p.m.

The bear was thrown into the path of a 2009 Kia Rondo operated by Tauhni Reynolds, 29, of Williamsport. Also with Reynolds were her two daughters, ages 10 and 7. The Kia had to be towed, police said.

Strauss and three occupants of the Reynolds vehicle were unharmed.

Danville police assisted along with the Mahoning Township Fire Department.
