MILTON — Twenty-three employees at the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit will receive a $2,000 bonus for notifying the administration of their plans to retire later this year.
The early-retirement notification incentive was offered to the educational agency’s 614 employees in November, CSIU spokesman Jennifer Spotts said.
In order to receive the $2,000, employees were required to submit letters no later than the end of January notifying administration of their retirement on or before June 30.
Executive Director Kevin Singer pitched the idea to pave the way for better planning, Spotts said.
The CSIU provides educational services and programs to 17 public school districts, three technical and more than 70 nonpublic schools in Northumberland, Snyder, Union, Montour and Columbia counties.
This year’s retirees include 10 professional and instructional staff, 11 administrative and support staff and two nonprofessional staff.
Two of the positions will be eliminated, two will be filled and the 19 other positions are being reviewed, Spotts said.
The administration will pay $46,000 in bonuses to the 23 retirees, but expects to save at least double that amount, she said.
Shelly Ritter, director of human resources, said 23 retirements in a single year is slightly higher than usual.
Area school districts have offered employees financial incentives for early-retirement notices over the years.
Employees of both the Selinsgrove and Shikellamy school districts have been offering incentives for some time to employees who give 60 days’ notice of retirement plans, ranging from a $5,000 bonus to health care coverage up to age 65.
Shikellamy Business Manager Dave Sinopoli said the incentive allows the district to save money through attrition or by hiring a less experienced employee for less money.
