Sherwood convicted of first degree murder

Death penalty hearing set for Tuesday

SUNBURY — A Northumberland County jury convicted Brentt Sherwood Monday night of first-degree murder in the December 2004 beating death of his 4-year-old stepdaughter.

The jury of 10 men and two women deliberated for 80 minutes Monday night before announcing guilty verdicts for first-degree murder, aggravated assault and recklessly endangering the welfare of children.

The jury will reconvene Tuesday morning to hear testimony in the penalty phase. District Attorney Anthony Rosini is seeking the death penalty.

Mr. Sherwood, 27, sat impassively, his hands folded in front of him as the jurors were polled individually on their verdicts.

Mr. Sherwood admitted at trial that he punched and kicked Marlee Rose Reed repeatedly on Dec. 7, 2004, causing her death the following day.

However, he pleaded a diminished capacity due to voluntary intoxication, claiming he was high on cocaine and not mentally able to form an intent to kill.
