Body of 20-year-old man found near Trevorton

SHAMOKIN — The autopsy on the body of a 20-year-old man found dead Thursday did not reveal the cause of his death, Northumberland County coroner James Kelley said.

David R. Polinski was reported missing Tuesday by his mother, Margaret Eisele, who hadn’t seen her son since 3 p.m. the previous Sunday at their Trevorton Road home in RR Shamokin, Zerbe Township Police Chief Degg Stark said.

Mr. Polinski was last seen by an unidentified friend at 8 p.m. Sunday, Chief Stark said.

An investigation began Tuesday afternoon when Mrs. Eisele reported her son missing to Zerbe Township patrolman Shennon Klopp.

On Wednesday, Mr. Klopp checked Mr. Polinski’s cell phone records and found there were no outgoing calls from the time he was last seen Sunday evening, Chief Stark said.

Mrs. Eisele told police that her son spent a lot of time in the mountainous terrain in Zerbe and Coal townships and frequented the isolated region in his car.

Chief Stark said she did not elaborate why Mr. Polinski visited the area.

A state police helicopter searched the area Wednesday, but there was no sign of the missing man.

On Thursday, Chief Stark organized a group of about 20 all-terrain vehicle drivers and was preparing a search to begin at 3 p.m. when a call came in to the Northumberland County 911 Center at about 2:35 p.m. that a body had been found in the wooded area near the Flats.

“There are tons of dirt paths and some are accessible by cars,” the police chief said.

Two men and a 12-year-old boy were planning to go target shooting and had parked their vehicle near 2044, the chief said.

They had walked about one-half mile east of Route 2044 in “rugged terrain” before spotting a car about 20 feet away. Chief Stark said the men recognized the foul odor and kept the child back as they approached the car.
