Updated: Fallen PSU student showing ’some positive signs’

STATE COLLEGE — A family friend of a 19-year-old Penn State cheerleader who fell five stories from a window at an off-campus apartment building says the woman opened her eyes Tuesday but remains in critical condition.

Randy Jepson, the Penn State men’s gymnastics coach, said Tuesday that Paige Raque showed “some positive signs” after some small movements and opening her eyes. Jepson said Raque’s family knows the recovery will be a slow process.

Raque’s brother, Parker, is the men’s gymnastics team captain.

Authorities have said the cheerleader fell 39 feet through a screened window during a party Saturday night. Police said Tuesday an investigation was continuing though the fall appears to have been accidental.

Raque was being treated at an Altoona hospital with head and pelvic injuries. She is from Louisville, Ky.
