Sunbury man perishes in fire

SUNBURY — A Sunbury man who died in a fire on Tuesday night in the city has been identified.

53-year-old Keith Bordner died in the blaze at 1005 Penn St. late Tuesday evening, said Sunbury Fire Chief Mike Rhoads. A state police fire mashal determined the cause of the blaze to be electrical and accidental, Rhoads also said on Wednesday morning.

Rhoads said he was first informed of the fire at 8:55 p.m.

Flames blasted through the two-story structure in a matter of minutes as firefighters from the Sunbury Fire Department fought furiously to contain the fire to the one structure, protecting adjacent homes.

By 9:30 p.m., the fire had still not been totally put out; just as black smoke began to billow from blasted-out windows, flames erupted again.Neighboring residents were evacuated from their homes and stood on sidewalks nearby.

Shortly after that, some firefighters who had been dousing the flames with water, entered the second floor of the house, attempting to put out whatever was still burning.

More than 50 personnel, including fire police, Sunbury police and state police officers assisted at the scene.
