WASHINGTON - U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., issued the following statement today on the shutdown of the federal government.
“Pennsylvanians have a right to be angry that a reckless minority in one faction of one party in one house of Congress has forced the government to shut down for the first time in 17 years and I share their outrage.
"The Speaker could act to open the government today by allowing a vote on the funding bill that the Senate first sent to the House on Friday.
"In a 20 minute vote, the shutdown would be over. To prevent a vote is reckless and irresponsible and the consequences for Pennsylvania and our nation are grave.
"I am encouraged that several Republican representatives have spoken out in favor of a clean funding bill and I hope that they can convince their colleagues to do the same. During the shutdown, my office is unable to maintain regular operations but the skeletal staff and I will do our best to be as responsive as possible.”
