Line Mountain High School student dies following one-car crash

HERSHEY — A Line Mountain High School student died early Wednesday morning from injuries suffered in a one-car accident midday Tuesday on Route 225 in Lower Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County.

Kayla A. Miller, 18, of Trevorton, died at 3:55 a.m. at Hershey Medical Center, where she had been flown by medical helicopter, according to a report issued Wednesday by Dauphin County Coroner Graham Hetrick.

Around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Miller lost control of her 2002 Ford Focus while driving north on Route 225, state police at Stonington said. The Ford partially left the roadway about a half-mile north of Meckley’s Limestone, re-entered the northbound lane, crossed into the southbound lane, then left Route 225 a second time.

The Ford went airborne and struck two trees, troopers said.

Miller was wearing a lap and shoulder belt at the time of the crash. She was entrapped and had to be extricated by fire and rescue personnel from Pillow.

Hetrick ruled Miller’s death as accidental and caused by a closed head injury.

Line Mountain Superintendent Dave Campbell said Miller was a senior who had just transferred from Shikellamy to his district.

Counselors were at Line Mountain High on Wednesday to help those students and staff members in need, and will be on hand as long as necessary, Campbell said.

“The family will notify us as soon as funeral arrangements are final,” he said. “We as a district offer our thoughts and prayers as well as any counseling resource we have to Kayla’s family. If there is anything we can do to help the family in their time of need, the district will make the appropriate resources available.”
