City taxes may go up $24

LEWISBURG — SUNBURY — The City Council announced Monday that residents could face a $24 average property tax increase after the first reading of the proposed $4.4 million budget for 2014.

The two-mill increase isn’t 100 percent certain, even though Councilman Todd Snyder announced recently that the city has a net loss of more than $150,000 on the year.

Snyder also told residents that the future didn’t look bright for 2014 unless cuts were made.

During Monday’s council meeting, Snyder said modifications are going to be made and money would be saved in various departments. A two-mill increase would raise the city’s millage from 23 mills to 25 mills, which is the maximum amount allowed.

Being $158,000 in the hole is a better situation than some of the budgets Sunbury Mayor David Persing said he has seen in the past.

“We aren’t in that bad of shape,” he previously said. “We will be looking at some new revenue from other places, and we will be working out these numbers in the next few months.”

Snyder agreed Monday night.

“We will be looking at this closely,” he said. “There will be several things that will change between now and a final passage.”

In other business, Sunbury Revitalization Inc. announced it would be returning the veterans’ banners on Nov. 21 at the new SRI office at 249 Market St. and that the annual Santa parade will be held Nov. 29.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, a resident asked who is monitoring the 50 surveillance cameras that have been placed throughout the city.

“Right now, we are recording and storing data,” said Snyder, who spearheaded the project. “We don’t have a large screen where someone is just sitting there all day and watching it. We are using the data for investigation purposes at this time.”

There will be a public budget meeting at 6 p.m. Nov. 18.
