Fire destroys 130 bales of hay

MOUNT PLEASANT MILLS — Fire damaged a section of a hay shed, burned 130 bales of organic hay and damaged equipment Sunday night at the James Mast farm at 1617 Pine Swamp Road.

Snyder County firefighters were on the scene for at least four hours. Mast said the family was not home when the fire broke out. Neighbors reported the blaze shortly after 7 p.m. and saved some of the family’s equipment. Mast said he thought some hay that was not sufficiently dry caused the fire, but added that he was not certain that was the case. Fire officials were still working at the scene at 11 p.m. and were unavailable for comment.

Mast thought the fire caused about $20,000 damage to a 60-foot section of the 200-foot by 50-foot shed. He estimated the hay loss at about $10,000. A forage harvester was also damaged but was still in operating condition, he said.
