Five-day strike a success, says prez of teachers union

DANVILLE — After picketing three hours Friday along busy Route 11, members of the Danville Education Association are expected back in the classroom Monday morning.

The union announced the nearly 190 teachers would picket in one location Friday — the last day of a five-day strike over wages and benefits.

Teachers who have been working without a new contract since June 2012 carried signs along Route 11, across from Danville Primary and near Danville High.

“We had a very successful week and it was very successful today,” union president Dave Fortunato said Friday.

“We look forward to being back in the classrooms and much prefer the classrooms than walking the picket line.”

The next step is nonbinding arbitration that automatically takes effect June 15.

An independent arbitrator will be appointed to hold a hearing and decide on a new contract to be considered by both sides. Fortunato expects that process to take about two months.

The strike has postponed graduation from June 6 to June 13.
