Shikellamy considers $1 million artificial turf

SUNBURY — Shikellamy may join Selinsgrove and Shamokin as the only Valley school districts with football teams playing home games on their own artificial turf, but the price tag of up to $1 million could keep the Braves on their balding natural grass field for a while longer.

Directors are discussing replacing natural grass at Shikellamy Stadium with a turf field because Superintendent Pat Kelley said the playing surface is “in bad shape.”

“Something has to be done,” Kelley said. “The field needs to be addressed. We just need to see how.”

Crab grass dots the field, Kelley said. Once fall — and football season — arrives, the crab grass dies, leaving the playing surface sprinkled with dirt patches.

“We are seeing what we can do for now to get it greener,” Kelley said. “We have consultants from Penn State coming in to examine the field and see how we can remedy this situation for now.”
