LEWISBURG — Lewisburg Area is the only school district in Pennsylvania to rank in the Top 20 of two academic honors lists compiled by the Pittsburgh Business Times in 2013.
Lewisburg was No. 16 for the second year running on the annual statewide chart of top-scoring public school districts, and No. 20 on the magazine’s “overachiever” ranking of districts that do better than expectations based on economics.
“It is widely acknowledged that the economic situation of a student is one of the strongest predictors of how well a student will perform academically,” wrote Ethan Lott, research director for the Pittsburgh Business Times. “A low percentage of economically disadvantaged students generally results in a high percentage of top performances on the state’s standardized tests.”
Lewisburg, however, dropped to No. 20 on the overachiever list from No. 16 in 2012.
Lewisburg also is the only rural public school district among the top-scoring 20, the rest being from around Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
Mount Carmel came in just ahead of Lewisburg on the overachiever’s list, ranking No. 19 after it was No. 31 in 2012. Also from Northumberland County, Shamokin ranks No. 30 on the overachiever list, a big gainer from No. 53 the previous year.
