REMINDER: 10-digit dialing begins here on Saturday

SUNBURY — Saturday is the day, Valley — 10-digit dialing is now a reality for local calls in the 570 area code.
Users trying to make a local call without dialing 570 first will be greeted with a voicemail instructing them to hang up and redial using the area code.
The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission announced the change in April. Callers do not have to dial a “1” first, however.
Phone users are advised to reprogram automatic dialing equipment as well to include the area code. Such devices include life safety systems such as LifeAlert, telephone sets, fax machines, alarm and security systems, gates, speed dialers, call forwarding settings and voicemail services. Cell phones also may need reprogramming if they do not already have the area code stored for local numbers.
PUC also suggests customers revise business stationery and advertising materials to include the area code.
The move is part of an overlay plan the PUC approved in 2010 to accommodate more phone numbers in the region. Part of that plan includes adding a new area code, 272.
Once existing 570 area code numbers are exhausted, new telephone numbers will be assigned under a 272 area code.
Starting Oct. 21, new phone service customers in the Valley will get 272 numbers.
