— MILTON — Charges have been filed in a June incident in which two Milton business owners say they were assaulted by another merchant.

Joshua Bailey, 24, owner of Josh Bailey’s Hand Made Tattoo on Broadway, is facing a misdemeanor charge of simple assault and  a summary charge of harassment, according to court documents.

Police said the incident began just before 8 p.m. June 17 when Mia Hostrander, owner of C&K Realty, of Milton, said she saw a group of young men on the loading dock of a property she manages that previously had been vandalized.

Hofstrander told police she called to the group from her car, asking the men to leave the property. Bailey then stood up and started yelling obscenities at Hostrander and coming toward her, police said.

Hostrander’s business partner, Daniel Bucharski, then exited the vehicle to ask the young men to leave, police said.

Bailey attacked Bucharski, according to police, hitting and kicking him.

Hostrander told police when she tried to break up the fight, Bailey’s girlfriend, Chantelle Swineford, pushed her from behind, officers said. Swineford has been charged with summary harassment, according to court documents.

Bucharski told police he did not retaliate and that he suffered a bruised eye, lacerations to an elbow and his back, bruised ribs and facial and scalp contusions, according to court documents.

Bailey claims he acted in self-defense. “I was basically attacked by a total stranger,” he said. “I just walked outside and just saw some people and they were screaming and hollering.”

Bailey said the incident can be traced to a rivalry between his shop and another local tattoo parlor, owned by a friend of Hofstrander’s.

The incident was caught on surveillance video, which police reviewed and said backs up Bucharski’s version.

Charges were filed Wednesday. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 9 a.m. July 31 in front of District Justice Richard Cashman in Milton.
