MAMARONECK, N.Y. —
Manuela Morgado was arraigned Thursday morning on one count of second-degree murder in the death of Jason Reish, her 4-year-old son with Dr. Timothy Reish, originally of Lewisburg.
Morgado, 46, arrived at Mamaroneck Village Court about 9 a.m. from the Westchester County Jail, where she has been since her arrest Monday. She faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in state prison, if convicted.
Mamaroneck Village police responded to Morgado’s residence about 10:45 a.m. Monday, finding Morgado in her bedroom in a semi-conscious state, cradling Jason, who was already dead, according to a press release from the Westchester County district attorney’s office.
Morgado was arrested Monday at Sound Shore Medical Center, where she had been taken for treatment. Jason Reish was pronounced dead at the scene. Jail officials have requested that Morgado, who is under suicide watch, have a mental health evaluation.
Her Legal Aid lawyer Havery Loeb objected, but Justice Christie Derrico said, “I’m not going to allow your client to be denied any necessary or required medical treatment if she needs it,” the Journal News reported. Derrico did not rule immediately.
Morgado was returned to the Westchester County Jail. She is scheduled to appear in court again Thursday.
Assistant District Attorney Christine Hatfield, deputy chief of the county’s child abuse bureau, is prosecuting the case.
Search warrants were executed for various items in the apartment and hospital, according to the district attorney’s office.
The investigation into the circumstances of the child’s death is ongoing, and autopsy results are pending.
Meanwhile, members of the Reish family prepared for Jason’s visitation Thursday afternoon and evening. His funeral is Friday.
Morgado and Reish were said to be embroiled in a custody battle over Jason.
The Journal News reported that during court proceedings, Hatfield told the court Morgado had sent threatening letters to Reish, who reunited with his former wife, Erin, sometime after Jason’s birth.
The Reishes are living together in Briarcliff Manor with their two children, ages 11 and 13.
