Local unemployment - and total workforce - drop in August

— HARRISBURG — There were about 200 fewer people listed as unemployed during August in the local four-county region, compared to July, but the total workforce in the four-county region also decreased by 1,700 during the same period.

The latest monthly report, released this week by the state Department of Labor and Industry, shows that about 7,800 people were unemployed during August in Northumberland, Montour, Snyder and Union counties, down from 8,000 in July.

About 86,700 of the total four-county workforce of 94,400 people were employed during August, according to the figures. In July, the total workforce in the four-county region was 96,100.

In Northumberland County, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 9 percent in August, up from 8.9 percent in July, and holding steady with the 9 percent rate recorded in August, 2011.

In Montour County, the August unemployment rate was 6.3 percent, up from 6.2 percent in July, but down from 6.5 percent in August, 2011.

Snyder County had a seasonally adjusted umemployment rate of 8 percent in August, down from 8.2 percent in July and 8.2 percent in August, 2011.

In Union County, the rate was 7.8 perecent in August, down from 7.9 percent in July and 8.3 percent one year ago.

The seasonally adjusted statewide and national unemployment rates in August both stood at 8.1 percent.
