Piglets found on side of highway near Reading

READING — Construction workers along a major highway in eastern Pennsylvania were in for a surprise when they looked inside a small trailer sitting along the side of the road near Reading.

A 5-by-7-foot trailer with only a thin tarp cover was packed with 55 piglets.

Officials at the Animal Rescue League of Berks County say the workers called police Wednesday, saying the trailer had been there for a couple of hours.

Animal Rescue League spokesman Chris Shaughness says the piglets were brought to the shelter and kept inside a horse barn.

The trailer's tires blew out and both wheels were removed. The owner, Antonio Salvador of Hampton, N.J., says he went to replace them and when he returned, his pigs were gone.

He's responsible for $400 in towing and other costs.
