— PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. — More than 100 educators and media members from across the country flocked to Parris Island on Tuesday to learn what it’s like to become a Marine.

The funny part is that Selinsgrove, Pa., was the talk of the base.

The Selinsgrove recruiting center is ranked No. 1 in Pennsylvania for gaining new recruits.

“We are glad you all are here with us today,” 1st Lt. Tim Irish said during a welcoming dinner.

“We want you all to experience what we go through, and we want you to be able to go back home and explain the misconception people may have about the Marines,” he said.

Educators from a number of school districts were on hand and looking star-struck at the men in uniform.

“This is the first time I am coming to one of these workshops,” guidance counselor Kelly Hinkledire, of Altoona, Pa., said. “This will be a great experience.”

Fellow educator Hully Hoover, also of Altoona, agreed.

“It will be great to see what goes on here,” she said. “This is a great opportunity the military provides for us.”

The weather in South Carolina topped out at nearly 75 degrees Tuesday, and that means just one thing for recruits and educators who will be participating in drills today.

“Drink plenty of water,” Irish said. “You are going to need it.”

The weeklong workshop begins today and will feature all aspects of training for the Marines.

The Daily Item will be providing stories every day along with photos of all the action.
