SUNBURY — Northumberland County commissioners voted 2-1 Tuesday to close three of 12 senior action centers.
“I come before you with a heavy heart,” Patricia A. Rumberger, Area Agency on Aging administrator, said as she addressed Commissioners Vinny Clausi, Rick Shoch and Steve Bridy. “This is something that has to be done because we just can’t afford to keep going like we are.”
Centers in Elysburg, Dewart and Riverside will be closed by Jan. 31. Only Bridy voted against the closures.
“This is pure fiscal,” she said. “I love all of our seniors.”
Center members are not showing up, Rumberger said.
“If you look at Riverside, they have 25 members and only four to six show up regularly,” she said. “Dewart has 50 members and only 14 show up.”
