Selinsgrove man going to trial on rape charges

MIDDLEBURG — A Selinsgrove resident accused of raping a young girl over four-year period is heading to trial in Snyder County.

Kenneth E. Spriggle, 48, of 85 Zechman Drive, nixed a plea deal Tuesday and requested he be tried by a jury for five counts each of felony rape of a child; statutory sexual assault; involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child; aggravated indecent assault; corruption of minors; misdemeanor indecent assault and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

Court records said he admitted to having sex with the girl, now 14, several times during a four-year period after she reported the sexual assaults.

State police intercepted a phone call between Spriggle and the girl earlier this year in which she mentioned having sexual relations with him on six occasions and he did not deny it. Later, Spriggle allegedly admitted to police that he had sex with the girl between five and 10 times.

Public defender Patrick Johnson told the court Tuesday that there is one “outstanding issue” involving the proposed plea deal that needs to be resolved with the district attorney before an agreement is reached. In the meantime, he asked Judge Michael T. Hudock to place the case on the docket for jury selection July 14.
