Derk, Kantz team wins

MIDDLEBURG -- The upstart team of Malcolm Derk and Joe Kantz elbowed aside veteran county Commissioners Rick Bailey and Steve Bilger in the primary election in Snyder County on Tuesday. Each racked up more than twice as many votes as their incumbents opponents.

The successful Republican challengers have strong feeling about job growth, compromise among county agencies and prison operations.

"I'm not sure what to think," said Mr. Derk, as he watched the results being posted in the hallway of the Snyder County Courthouse on Tuesday evening. "We've had great support from the grass-roots."

Mr. Derk was nearly speechless as he contemplated the victory for his campaign.

"I'm a little shocked," he admitted.

Mr. Derk and Mr. Kantz ran a very low-key campaign.

"Much of what we've done was door-to-door campaigning and meeting with borough councils in the area," Mr. Derk said.

Mr. Kantz was not at the courthouse to celebrate with Mr. Derk.

"We won't count our chickens just yet," Mr. Derk said. "We'll start campaigning again in the fall."

The unofficial results showed Mr. Kantz with 3.361 votes and Mr. Derk with 3,263 votes. By contrast, the incumbents, Steven Bilger received 1,471 votes and Rick Bailey got 1,382. The fifth candidate, Wayne Miller, received 937 votes.

In November, Mr. Derk and Mr. Kantz will face off with Democratic candidates Richard Bickhart and Greg Shambach.
