Understaffing

I read with interest your article regarding police mutual aid in Northumberland County. It struck me as odd that the local officials quoted in the article are quick to voice their displeasure at the situation, but stopped short of accepting responsibility for creating the issue.

As your article pointed out, the rampant understaffing of municipal police departments in the county is no secret. In fact, it is a serious problem facing the majority of municipalities in Pennsylvania.

The reality is that such issues are easily corrected by those same officials who are complaining about it. If our local elected officials would finally take responsibility for providing effective and adequate police protection to their residents, such issues would be the exception, rather than the rule.

These officials have their priorities backwards. When public safety takes a back seat to wasteful spending on other unnecessary endeavors, this is the end result.

In the end, this issue is one of elected officials neglecting their most basic duty, which is to provide for the protection of the citizenry.
