Cheers and jeers

Cheers: Bob Zimmerman Sr., 84, of Northumberland, is one of the few remaining veterans from the 11th Armored Division who served under Gen. George Patton in World War II, seeing action in the famous Battle of the Bulge in France. Zimmerman traveled to Louisville, Ky., for what is expected to be the last annual reunion of the veterans' group. Last year, only 40 made it to the reunion. Locally, another veteran, Thomas Smith, also of Northumberland, served in the same batallion, but was unable to attend the reunion.

Cheers: To the Snyder County Council of the Arts, which hosted a weeklong art camp for 57 youths in Selinsgrove. The council — and the many other organizations that host similar day camps — help provide young people with worthwhile activities while schools are closed for the summer.

On behalf of weary parents all over, we say, "Thank you."

Jeers: To Danville Borough Council for charging nonprofit groups for the right to hold meetings in a public building. Council members said the $50 fee is meant to cover utility costs. Council might be better off asking groups to make donations to offset utility bills, rather than implement the set fee.

Cheers: To Danville businessman Tom Beiter, who stepped up to help after listening to Danville Borough Council tell Herman Jones it would not waive the $50 fee to hold an educational event on canals in the Danville Ballroom. Beiter said he would pay the fee for the session.

Cheers: To Dr. Phil Sosland and the other volunteer board members who have gotten the Susquehanna River Valley Dental Clinic up and running in Sunbury. The clinic is booked through September. The clinic employs one full-time dentist, two part-time dentists and a dental hygienist. Almost all of their patients are served by medical assistance, a program that few dentists are willing to participate in, due to the reimbursement rate offered in Pennsylvania.

  • Mutual aid is necessary

Mutual aid agreements in local law enforcement strike at the heart of basic small-town decency. When a neighbor is in need, those equipped to help ought to drop everything and spring to aid.

  • Lifting me higher

I am not a winner of a Pulitzer Prize, nor am I an author of best selling novels, I'm just a human being attempting to live life here on earth with purpose and I can find no greater way to do that than through my faith and my belief in God.
