  • Questions about prison should give way to answers
    Some of the criticism targeting the Northumberland County Prison can be attributed to the age of the facility and its antiquated design.

  • Excluding gays will not protect marriage
    State Sen. John Gordner, R-27 of Berwick, is one of the sponsors of the Marriage Protection Act -- legislation that would allow commonwealth residents to vote on a constitutional amendment prohibiting gay couples from marrying.

  • Republicans should heed voter shift
    The Republican Party should not take voters in the 10th Congressional District for granted. The congressional district -- including all of the Central Susquehanna Valley and portions of northeastern Pennsylvania -- has long been considered safely Republican.

  • Communities unite to fight cancer
    Charitable organizations raise money in many ways -- dances, bingo, auctions, car washes, bake sales and on and on.

  • Help launch community college here
    How rapidly stakeholders embrace a visionary plan is not necessarily the best measure of its long-term success. Community groups have a tendency to step forward tentatively to gain information and show some degree of support, if only to demonstrate they are open to new ideas.

  • Delays allow small repairs to become crises
    Small cracks are easy to ignore. Cracks on bridges and roads. Cracks in walls. Cracks in sewer pipes.

  • Most PFAs provide needed protection in difficult cases
    Protection from abuse orders are as prone to abuse as anything else. But that does not mean they should be avoided when they could help save a life.

  • Landlord licensing would even playing field
    Any expansion of government control should be taken only after other options are explored. After years of debate and worry, Sunbury seems to have reached such a crossroads in the city's struggle to cope with the number of rundown rental units in the municipality.

  • Government on the brink
    The most amazing thing about a possible state government shut down is how little things will change for most people -- at first.
