Cheers and jeers

Cheers: To Kayla Kline, the Mifflinburg Area High freshman who Sunday won her second consecutive championship in the NFL's Punt, Pass and Kick competition. Kayla's victory was announced during Sunday's NFL playoff game in Atlanta. With a combined score of 351.6 feet, she placed first in the 14- and 15-year-old girls' division. Last year, she was the champion in the girls' 12- and 13-year-old bracket with 339 feet.

Jeers: To Mount Carmel Area School District administrators, who Jan. 11 questioned for three hours -- and without her mother's knowledge -- a 5-year-old kindergartner who told classmates she was going to shoot them, and then herself, with her pink bubble gun, according to an attorney. The girl's 10-day suspension for "terroristic threats" was reduced to two days for her being a "threat to harm others." Her name is being withheld to protect her identity.

Cheers: To environmentally minded Danville Area High students, who kept 11-plus tons of recyclables out of landfills last year. They collected 22,188 pounds or slightly more than 11 tons at Danville High, it was announced last week.

Cheers: To Jeremy Frits, treasurer of the Sunbury Eagles club, whose pitch to the city to host the statewide organization's second billiards tournament in four years was accepted by City Council on Monday. The tournament, to be held in May, is expected to bring 2,000 people to Sunbury. Eighty teams participated in the 2010 tournament held at the city's ice arena.

Jeers: To a Paxinos woman accused of driving under the influence during an accident Sept. 8 after which police found a child in a rear-center child seat. Sharron Louise Sayre, 36, of 1343 Airport Road, waived her right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday before District Judge Marvin Shrawder. Milton troopers said a one-third-full can of Budweiser was found near the dashboard after the crash in Valley Township, Montour County.
