Cheers and jeers

Cheers: To the Buffalo Valley Regional Police Department on its first birthday. Six years in the making, Buffalo Valley's force is among three to form in 2012 in Pennsylvania. With 15 full-time and five part-time officers serving 12,500 residents between East Buffalo Township and Lewisburg, there is more police visibility, said Peter Bergonia, who sits on the police commission as well as Lewisburg Borough Council. He and fellow police commission member Thomas Zorn attribute the success in large part to Chief Paul Yost, who brought together the two departments and has paid meticulous attention to operations and detail.

Cheers: To the anonymous couple who pledged $10 million to Bucknell University as a show of support in light of the school's recent revelation that it had misreported student standardized test scores to U.S. News & World Report for at least five years. It's the third-largest pledge ever made to the university, said Andy Hirsch, school spokesman. The couple asked that all the money go to scholarships. The couple phoned university President John Bravman a few days after the Lewisburg school announced that some SAT and ACT exam scores had been left out of Bucknell's data. This misconstrued information from 2006 to 2011 went to U.S. News & World Report magazine for its annual best colleges in America ranking.

Cheers: To Leslie Young, Montour County's only female fire chief, who on Wednesday night learned she had been chosen as the Pennsylvania American Legion's state Firefighter of the Year. She joined the Mahoning Township East End Fire Department 16 years ago, and has served as its deputy chief for four years. Young rescued two children from a house fire in 2002 and a woman from a midrise fire in 2010.

If she receives the Legion's national award, all her expenses would be paid to attend the organization's national convention. She will be invited to attend the Legion state convention July 17-21 in Harrisburg.
