Cheers and jeers

CHEERS: To the 13 participating auto dealerships that will donate a portion of their April sales to benefit the Susquehanna River Valley Dental Clinic in Sunbury. Auto dealers taking part are: W&L Subaru, Selinsgrove Ford, BZ Motors, Mull's Auto Sales, Aubrey Alexander Toyota, Zimmerman's Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep, Northwoods Nissan, the New Paul Stine Chevrolet, Alexander Buick-Cadillac-GMC, SMC Kia, Blaise Alexander Ford, Front Street Motors and Sunbury Motors. Most health care plans or programs do not include dental care, and many Americans don't have dental insurance. The Susquehanna River Valley Dental Clinic provides dental care to uninsured and under-insured residents of Northumberland, Snyder and Union counties.

CHEERS: To the Valley's Rotarians who stepped up to organize the above fundraiser. We talked to (the dealerships) to see if they would respond in kind," said David Lawer, vice president-elect of the Selinsgrove Rotary Club and event coordinator. "They were very gracious. They know that a healthy community also means healthy customers." Lawer said this is one of the biggest Rotary club efforts in the Valley, combining Selinsgrove, Lewisburg, Mifflinburg and Sunbury.

JEERS: To those who think organizing a group with a catchy title constitutes a solution. Case in point is the Mayors Against Illegal Guns. The power behind the group is New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, with major funding from the National Rifle Association, of course. Mayors, like most of us, want gun policy changes that make sense. This isn't one of them.

CHEERS: To Beavertown Mayor Cloyd Wagner who joined the group, but then thought better of it and unjoined. The group, he figured, was "pushing the envelope." And, we might add, it's an empty envelope at that.

CHEERS: To Kent Dobson and Mike Berry, both of Sunbury, who put together a four-band concert to raise money for victims and family members of two city fires that swept through adjacent homes on Penn Street in March.
