Today's Rave: Miley Cyrus at the VMAs

— If there was any doubt she’d left Hannah Montana far behind her, Miley Cyrus’ performance with Robin Thicke at Sunday night’s Video Music Awards erased it in an instant.

The performance was labelled “embarrassingly raunchy,” “well beyond provocative” and “surreal” by various media outlets.

She appeared on stage with a multitude of dancing teddy bears in a bodysuit adorned with a cartoon character as she performed her song “We Can’t Stop.”

She twerked, which is a provocative butt-shaking dance, changed into a nude bikini, ran a fan’s foam finger along her privates as Robin Thicke appeared on stage to perform “Blurred Lines,” then gave the singer a lap dance.

The performance immediately drew shocked and negative reactions. It was just two year ago, after all, that Cyrus portrayed innocent, fun-loving Hannah Montana, a pop-star in disguise and role model to teens and tweens.

Here are some local thoughts from our Facebook page:

“Miley hasn't figured out yet that being a top performer requires talent not just ‘weirdness.’ She is a beautiful young lady and that performance merely made her look cheap and tawdry.” - Marjorie Heintzelman

“I think her performance was distasteful. Why do young ladies feel the need to stick their tongues out all the time? I guess the term ‘young lady’ doesn't really apply to that performance.” - Julie Keely

“Her performance was disturbing and disgusting.” - Brynne Clauser

“Disgusting! When did she go from cute little Hannah Montanna to Tramp?!? I guarantee Billy Ray had an ‘achey breakey heart’ after seeing that performance!” - Sharon Richter

“It was sickening, but the problem is we all - media included - need to stop talking about the walking freak show that she has become.” - Paula Fornwalt-White
