Cheers and jeers

Cheers: To the state police troopers who allegedly obtained evidence that David Selby had recognized he was too sleepy to be driving many more miles before he dozed off and his truck allegedly strayed off Route 45 and slammed into Keith Wertz, who was standing in a Vicksburg driveway. Selby's tell-tale text message provides evidence of gross negligence, Union County District Attorney D. Peter Johnson said after a charge of involuntary manslaughter was filed against the New Jersey resident.

Cheers: To Selinsgrove Area Middle School teacher Lance Schwartz, who won $15,000 from a textbook publisher by posting an online video describing an innovative in-depth project he had students complete in his technical education class. In the project, students build wooden cars that are propelled by carbon dioxide canisters. Students are graded based on how fast the cars travel.

Jeers: To the state Republican Party, which could not limit its election tampering to a botched bid to roll out new voter ID rules. The GOP also went to court to try to keep the Libertarian Party candidates off the ballot in Pennsylvania. The Republicans challenged the validity of some of the signatures submitted by Libertarian candidates. A state judge ruled last week that despite the Republican objections, Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Gary Johnson and three other Libertarians can remain on the ballot.

Cheers: To all those involved in helping foster the culture of achievement at Lewisburg Area High School, where students in the 11th grade scored tops in the state in science in the most recent statewide assessments. Superintendent Mark DiRocco gave some of the credit to the community support provided by the Green Dragon Foundation. The fundraising group provided science equipment that DiRocco said helped drive up test scores. It does take a village to raise a child.

Cheers: To the Susquehanna Valley Conservatives organization for successfully creating a forum for more thoughtful discussion of political issues and philosophy. The group hosted a panel discussion last week featuring two liberal speakers and two conservatives to discuss their contrasting views about what direction the nation should take. It is the type of serious conversation that is too often absent from politics.
