— Senator Pat Toomey said in a statement Wednesday that he would take receive a check as long as federal workers are employed, joining a list of 108 lawmakers to do so. The senator said in a statement Wednesday that “As long as furloughed federal employees are not getting paid during this shutdown, I will refuse my paycheck too.”

The simple question “Should members of Congress receive their salary during a shutdown of the federal government?” drew huge responses from Valley readers. More than 300 voted on a poll by 11 this morning and the response was overwhelming, 97 percent saying they should with the vote total of 295 to 10.

Here are some responses from our Facebook page:

“They all need a reality check so they can see how their ‘decisions or indecisions’ affect their own lives and they should not be exempt.” – Tina Auman

“The rest of us don't get paid when we aren’t working.” – Teresa Kovalick

“Is this the real question - should congress be able to give itself a raise? The law that pays them now, also keeps them from giving themselves a raise. So if you do away with one, do we do away with the other? I’m sure we don’t think it would be right for congress to be able to raise their own wages.” – Michael Doyne

“They should have their salary reduced due to the budget issues and certainly no pay increases for the next 4 years!” – T.J. Prosseda

“If they could see how it feels for the underpaid people to live maybe they might finally realize how to manage money.” – Adrienne Tamaccio

“There should be a penalty on all of Congress for not balancing the budget every year and that penalty should be the loss of a year’s salary, two years for allowing the government to shut down, three years for allowing the governments credit rating to be lowered.” – Tim Gelvin

“Since these yahoos can’t even do their job to begin with, they should all be fired!” – Crisi Moroskie Zimmerman

“Lock them in til they have a bill and it’s passed. They should not be able to leave their job til it’s complete. I know if I did not do my job I be fired!” – Ryan Beers
