Prevent animal abuse

— After reading a letter to the editor in The Daily Item approximately two weeks ago about the cat that caught his leg in a trap and tried to gnaw himself out of it, I decided the problem of animal abuse should be addressed. I also read about a case in Philadelphia that happed Jan. 9 of this year in which a pit-bull was tied to a railing at an abandoned school and stoned to death. He was tied so tight he had no chance to defend himself or try to escape. That's truly one of the most disgusting things I've ever heard. How could you tie a defenseless animal up and beat it to death? I know that's in Philadelphia, but I see dogs in Northumberland and Sunbury all the time that are chained outside when it's too hot or too cold out. Plus, some people have too many pets and don't take care of them.
There are many ways we can prevent animal abuse. Do not get a pet if you're not sure you can take care of it. Get your dog or cat fixed so unwanted puppies or kittens aren't a problem. Don't keep your pet chained outside all day when it's freezing out or stuck in hot cars during the summer. And if the dog or cat looks like it's in pain, take it to a vet. In our state, it's a felony to commit animal abuse, and it could result in a jail sentence or fine. It wouldn't be a bad idea to increase the fine. So, the next time you're about to neglect, beat or harm your pet in any way, keep that in mind.
