Not forgotten
Donald "Dee" Johnson graduated from Lewisburg High School in 1954 and was one of the most outstanding all-around athletes to come out of "Green Dragon" country. Dee and Dick "Monk" Beck, in my opinion, were the top two, but being a teammate and friend of both, my opinion may be showing more than a little bias.
When Dee was senior, he led the Susquehanna Valley Basketball League in scoring with 326 points. He was named to the first team all-star squad. He was also among the league leaders in scoring touchdowns, home runs and RBI's. Dee was co-captain and fullback who led a good 1953 football team to a 7-2 record. He was not the fastest back, but his power was awesome and his gliding style of running was special. When we needed 3 yards, we just gave the ball to Dee. He was also an outstanding linebacker.
The 1953 football team coached by the late Andy Sember and Jim "Rabbit" Peters was loaded with talent. The top three received football scholarships to play football at the college level. Dee at University of South Carolina, George "Rebel" Forbes at North Carolina State (Rebel was a tight end with great hands and was one of the few Green Dragons to make the all-state team), and Bob Thomas, quarterback at William & Mary.
Dee's dad took Paules "Hoot" Gibson and myself to see Dee play at South Carolina. In that game, he ran for more than 100 yards. He went on to have a good career with the Game Cocks. Off the field, Dee had a great personality and always wore a big smile. He was also a great jokester. He is gone but not forgotten.
