Most area citizens now know that National Gypsum and En-Tire Logistics want to build a tire burning electric plant in White Deer Township. The DEP in Williamsport has tentatively approved it and is now considering comments from citizens who oppose it. Here is the most incredible fact about that proposed incinerator: Each year, it will burn about 100 million pounds of shredded tires, will generate hundreds of thousands of pounds of air emissions, and it will be located 1.3 miles from an elementary school and about one mile from a nursing home.
Though the DEP and the companies guarantee the burner's safety, scientists are not yet certain about long term effects of all the emissions involved. Also, the 3,000 trucks per year that will come and go from the plant will present their own hazards, and all such plants have the remote possibility of a major accident.
Is that kind of world you want to live in? Where companies would build such a plant so close to a school for kids and a home for elderly people? And, the Department of Environmental Protection would approve it?
If it's not your kind of world, let the DEP know that within the next days by sending a letter to: Mr. Muhammad Zaman, PADEP. 208 W. Third St., Williamsport, PA 17701.
