Ostrich policies

Mitt Romney was a moderate Republican when governor of Massachusetts and I for one thought he would make a good president. I believe a strong moderate Republican president would be good for the country. He promoted a health plan that some say was the basis for Obama's plan. Now Romney says Obamacare must go.

Back in the Nixon-Ford era there was no conflict with environmental protection. In fact, Richard Nixon signed the Clean Air Act of 1970, as well as the Endangered Species Act. Let's not forget George H.W. Bush who promised to be "the environmental president". He revised the Clean Air Act to reduce air pollution, acid rain and protect the ozone layer.

Today, it's a whole different story (damn the environment, full speed ahead). Newt Gingrich during his presidential campaign called for abolishing the Environmental Protection Agency. You know, the agency that develops regulations to protect our health by limiting air and water pollution, lead in paint, poisons in our food, control sewage disposal, nuclear plant location and operation and much more. Michele Bachmann vowed that in her administration, "the EPA will have doors locked and lights turned off". The 2012 Republican party platform says the government should "properly and correctly apply environmental laws and regulations, always in support of economic development, job creation, and American prosperity and leadership".

You don't have to look closely to see that there is nothing about safeguarding human health or protecting planet earth. Romney in his convention speech got in line with the party dogma and poked fun at Obama's concern for climate change. He said, "My promise is to help you and your family".

To reduce emissions equals increased cost for many industries and that's a no-no. Their reaction is (the ostrich effect) to bury your collective heads in the sand, deny everything and rely on that old myth if we cut taxes all will be well.
