---- — Editor's note: The following was sent to Muhammad Zaman, Environmental Program manager, and shared with The Daily Item. The EP is accepting comments from the public until July 5.
Dear Mr. Zaman,
My daughter is a lifelong steroid-dependent asthmatic. The smoke from this burner -- whose owners can't even tell us what's in it -- could kill her.
This is an outmoded technology being presented as something "green," and the people who expect to profit from it are treating local residents with utter contempt. At the last meeting, they couldn't even be bothered to hear our concerns.
So you have a choice: you can represent them, or We the People, whose taxes pay you to look after our well-being, not theirs.
At the very least, you could give us more time to evaluate the true impact of this burner and insist that the owners provide complete and accurate data regarding plant equipment and procedures as well as the chemical composition of everything that will be burned, so that We the People can scrutinize what will go into our air, water, farm animals and produce before any decision is made.
DEP is increasingly disliked, mistrusted and considered a corporate tool by otherwise loyal Republicans. A lot of that was the doing of your predecessor. It would be lovely indeed if you turned things around.
