I read the letter in disbelief, but when I got to the end and saw who wrote it, I was stunned. I thought to myself, this fellow used to be a county commissioner. Please think about what Mr. Bossert said. It is OK for law enforcement officers to stop you, an American citizen, and treat you in a manner which they, on their own, deem proper, regardless of the requirements of law. How many documented nightmares must we see to realize that this leads to the deepest abuses perpetrated by power maniacs? It is downright scary.
This case is not about playgrounds, it’s not about good intentions. It is about law enforcement officers following the law, and we must demand that! I believe the jurors got it right. That being said, I wish Chief Zerbe the best in the final adjudication of his case.
