Saving county records

Thank you so much for publishing our letter a few weeks ago to the Northumberland County Commissioners concerning the preservation of the county’s historical records

We wish to inform your readers of the latest happenings even though we have not had a response from all the commissioners.

We have created a group of concerned citizens on Facebook. Please visit “Saving Northumberland Historical Records” and read what is happening. This group was created on Dec. 2 and within the first two weeks is up to 365 members from people throughout this great nation of ours!

If you do not have a Facebook account, we also have created an email address, Voice your opinion and concerns!

Just a few tidbits of information:

Did you know Northumberland County was the 10th county in the State of Pennsylvania, created March 12, 1772 from Lancaster, Cumberland, Berks, Bedford and Northampton. She covered 8,000 square miles, grew to 15,000 square miles by 1786.

Then she began “giving birth”; first to Luzerne born 1786, Mifflin born 1789, Lycoming born 1795, Centre born 1800, twins Columbia and Union born 1813. Then her grandchildren started to arrive between 1800 and 1855 and the great grandchildren from 1839 to 1860. By then she was down to 477 square miles. Northumberland was the mother of 42 percent of today’s current counties in Pennsylvania!

A meeting is presently being arranged to meet with the Northumberland County commissioners in February. Let us work together to get our history moved out of the basement of the courthouse to a more secure, friendly and healthy environment before it disappears. Let us prevent Northumberland County from following the footsteps of Franklin County, N.C.

Franklin County recently had to throw out their historical records because they were neglected and disintegrated in the courthouse basement!
