The Daily Item
Every day on the front page of The Daily Item, there are heartbreaking stories of people who are in dire straits and are asking for help. Then there is an article about the rail trail, which has acquired another grant, this one for $488,000! There seems to be a great disconnect here between needs and wants.
It seems unconscionable to me that such a huge amount of money is going to the rail trail at this time of high unemployment, higher prices on heating oil, food, etc. People are hurting in our area, and the last thing on their minds is biking or walking on a trail.
It would be interesting if The Daily Item could tell us just how much money has already been spent on this rail trail. Their previous estimate that there were 400 people using the trail daily seems greatly exaggerated.
